We all think about ordering our meal on UberEats or FoodPanda, but this involves transporting the food and packaging it to take away. So how can you reduce your impact by ordering takeaway?

Choose the closest restaurants. Outside of rush hour, you can walk to them and enjoy a breath of fresh air to order from one of your favourite restaurants. Tip: Bring your own containers to avoid unnecessary packaging and some restaurants even offer discounts on the bill.

Don't ask for extra cutlery. Just before you pay, the application offers you the option of adding cutlery, which is unnecessary when you are at home. You can even add in comments that you want to reduce the packaging used for your order.

Order more dishes. In these tough times, we all dream of good restaurant food instead of instant noodles, so instead of hesitating to order more than one dish, order the ones that make you feel good at once. This will save the deliveryman trips and allow you to enjoy good food several times a week.

This article will help you in your next food shopping choices to be more green. More and more, large supermarket chains such as Carrefour are deciding to value local products so it's up to us consumers to seize the opportunity to make a small change in our fridge. We're giving you the tips you need to know, so be prepared to take notes. 😉

  • Choose unprocessed products.

The processing of products has a real environmental impact. Because of the standards imposed by many manufacturers, there is a lot of product waste and the packaging of products does not help. If you choose unprocessed products, you value the diversity of shapes of fruit and vegetables but also use no packaging.

  • Check the seasonality of products.

I don't need to explain to you that eating strawberries in winter is not very ecological and on top of that these products are generally more expensive. To make things easier for you, you can access the product seasonality calendar by clicking here.

  • Buy from local farmer markets.

This is one of the easiest ways to limit your impact as their products are usually from Taiwan, in season and have no packaging. We'd like to share with you a great initiative by Homemakers Union Consumers Co-op, advocating support for local agriculture and green living with products from local producers. For more information on the concept, please visit their website.

  • Develop a radar for labels.

Train yourself to recognise the different labels, local products, organic and/or fair trade products. If you have a choice, it's always better to choose well-designed products that respect the people involved and the environment.

Last week, to satisfy my hunger, I went to get a snack in one of the convenience stores on the university campus. I had a sweet tooth, so I chose a box of Oreo. Back home, I decide to open the packaging to enjoy these lovely biscuits. And there, surprise, the Oreos were still packed in another packaging, over-wrapping...  I think you have understood that today's topic will be packaging. We will proceed with the 3-R method: refuse where possible, reduce if it is an option or recycle.

        1. REFUSE 拒用:

Tip number 1 is the simplest and most effective! Refuse all types of packaging. For example, when you go shopping at the market, you don't need a plastic bag for your fruit or vegetables. These products are protected by their skins, simply put them in your bag or basket.  Or choose to eat on the spot, and in addition you can relax and chat.

        2. REDUCE 少用:

Banana leaf wrappers are a great alternative for packaging certain food products. They are tied with a thin piece of bamboo. A way to minimise environmental impact when choosing the take-away option.

A great trick for wrapping items for gifts, for example, is Furoshiki. This Japanese art of gift wrapping is a great example of the concept of reuse by using fabric instead of traditional wrapping paper.

Alternatively, you can opt for returnable packaging. These types of packaging are being developed by large chains such as Burger King, who have partnered with TerraCycle Loop to offer their customers an eco-friendly option.

Why not eat the packaging? Some retailers have developed edible packaging so no waste is created! The global fast food chain KFC has teamed up with British food scientists, the Robin Collective, to develop a flavoured edible cup.

        3. RECYCLE 回收:

Compostable and biodegradable packaging allows the packaging to be used instead of becoming waste. Some retailers even offer to grow a plant with their product packaging. This is revolutionary!

Otherwise think about upcycling the packaging! We have many articles on this subject, take a look!

The beautiful days are here, so think about enjoying the beautiful beaches and swimming in the sea. Here are our tips for limiting your impact on the aquatic environment.

Wear reef-safe sunscreen.

Sunscreens are essential to protect our skin from the sun's rays but they can certainly damage marine ecosystems. Here are the ingredients to watch out for when choosing your reef-friendly sunscreen:

  • Oxybenzone and Octinoxate, they trigger a stress reaction in corals).

  • Titanium dioxide, which produces hydrogen peroxide in the ocean, which is toxic to corals and other animals.

  • Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, which should not be nano-sized, as nanoparticles are tiny and can be eaten by marine animals or damage their gills or internal systems.

  • Mineral oil (or petroleum products), which is harmful to seabirds and other marine animals.

Some brands use the 'Reef Friendly' or 'Reef Safe' symbol on their sunscreens to indicate that they are environmentally friendly, double check the ingredients. You should pick the water-resistant or ocean safe sunscreens.

Bonus: That a sound that I personally love : Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen) from Quindon Tarver and Josh Abrahams

補充:這是我個人喜歡的歌曲:Quindon Tarver 和 Josh Abrahams 的《Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)》

Buy chemical-free flip-flops.
Wearing flip-flops while walking on the beach may not seem like a big deal but it can be harmful to the environment. Some flip-flops are made from a variety of chemicals that can leach into the water. Choose a pair of flip-flops that will last over time, made from responsible and environmentally friendly materials.

Take part in litter picks on Taiwanese beaches.
Waste can be carried out to sea and follow the currents for thousands of kilometres. It can accumulate in what is known as the Great Garbage Patch (also known as the 8th continent) before being carried by the currents to another beach in the world. Many associations in Taiwan carry out waste collection events such as the NSYSU student association, so feel free to participate in these collections or simply make sure you don't leave any waste behind.

Enjoy non-polluting activities such as surfing, sailing or snorkelling.

There's nothing better than water activities that use the energy of the sea, so you enjoy it without affecting it. Our best spot: Liuqiu, a coral island in the southwest of Taiwan Island.

Don't feed the animals. The food you offer to wild animals can cause digestive problems, illnesses or nutritional imbalances.

Don’t take seashells from the beach.

By collect shells, you could rob sea creature of a home and affect the ocean’s ecosystems & increase shoreline erosion. So, next time you can simply take a wonderful picture of it ;)

Noted: We strictly followed Taiwan CDC’s Covid-19 rules by wearing masks and hand sanitizing during the whole interview.

These photos are taken on the streets nearby our school (NSYSU). Do you notice that the trash cans are hard to be seen?

We have been here for almost 9 months here in Kaohsiung and remember exactly when We found just a few trash cans are placed on the street of where We live (the same in other cities that We have been to).
This is obviously a simple yet smart move towards keeping streets clean. It also reminds me of South Korea with its brilliant volume-based fee waste system enforced back in 1995. “This pay-as-you-throw waste management system would impose a differentiated treatment cost determined by the amount of waste generated by each household resident. Under the system, waste is collected in synthetic resin bags, that are purchased at the price of the waste treatment cost”. Recyclable wastes however, remained free of charge as long as being sorted in separate bins. This would play a significant role in reducing the volume of garbage generated while encouraging residents to maximise their recycling. Prior to this, recycling rates were extremely low since there was no incentive for households to care about recycling.
Lots of questions were going around my mind on how Taiwanese actually like the fewer dustbins and could the waste rate policy from South Korea be applied in Taiwan. That’s why me and my teammate Chloe hit the street of Kaohsiung to find out!
Our first interviewee shared that he gets used to carrying his personal trash along until he is back home to get rid of them. So, he finds it completely fine with the fact that Taiwan’s public space reduces the number of garbage bins. He further agrees that this move would help prevent people from littering on the street. The guy also mentioned that even though the country has been making increasing efforts to waste management, not all of Taiwanese people knows how to properly sort their waste. He even took some specific examples which people are confused to sort, including straw’s individually wrapped packages and the plastic cover of single-use utensils. As for waste sorting, he believes that stricter processes should be imposed at households’ level as he finds most of the Taiwanese won’t do separating trash at home.
He agreed with the policy and said that the policy could contribute to a higher recycling rate in Taiwan where there is little penalty for households to care about recycling.

We then bumped into a mother and her high school daughter on the street who are very much engaged with our questions. The mother never really thinks about the fact there are less garbage bins in Taiwan as she actually believes that it is the same case in every country. And they appeared to responsibly manage their personal waste by holding on to them in the car or backpacks until they find the right place to toss in.
She added that waste sorting very much depends on the public awareness which she found to be relatively lower among the elderly than the other groups. Our conversation got more exciting when we talked about the waste management scheme imposed in South Korean. Both the mother and her daughter would be more than happy to have such policy in Taiwan because it would help bring waste management in the country to the next level. She strongly believes that it would be successful by citing the success story of the ban on free plastic shopping bags from many common businesses as a measure restricting plastic bag use (in Taiwan, people who need shopping plastic bags now have to pay for them).

The next interviewee said “We do notice that fewer garbage bins are placed here on the street and it is a good move in certain ways by reminding us about how much trash we produce because we have to carry  our waste along until until we get home” he explained what he usually manage his personal trash. However, he expressed mixed thoughts by pointing out some cons of taking away public trash bins. “The only way to throw your trash is to wait for the garbage truck which indeed causes inconvenience for those who came home late from work. And so, We saw some of them just throw their trash on the street instead”. When being asked to give his opinions of the South Korean’s pay-as-you-throw policy, he disagrees to apply in Taiwanese context as there are still many people are not able to afford the non-recyclable waste fine.
Despite how much potential the policy seems to be, some don’t give 100% trust on it. We met a couple who were saying that even with the policy executed, it may not do much to the waste management and many people would be willing to pay.

To sum up, it’s fair to say that Taiwan has achieved a remarkable result by getting rid of many public dustbins. This method indeed decreases littering while reminding the citizens of waste sorting. On the other hand, one of its disadvantages is that you have to carry the trash with you all the way home (or until you find a public trash bin). But once you become familiar with it, you will no longer feel that keeping the trash with you unusual or annoying. In the end, we always need to sacrifice our convenience for the sake of Mother Earth, right?!

This time, in this article, we will tackle our carbon footprint from internet consumption. To give you an idea, if the internet was a country, it would be the 6th largest consumer of electricity in the world. To make you an eco-responsible consumer of the internet here are some tips:

First, you can change your search engine.

Today, Google has 63% of the market share. However, it has 100% free and more responsible alternatives to Google. For example, the Ecosia search engine uses its profits to plant trees and runs on 100% renewable energy. As a bonus: Ecosia anonymises all search queries after four days, which means that it is impossible for the company to link behaviour to a specific user after this period. Click here for a full list of alternatives for your search engine.

Go directly to the websites instead of googling them.
This will avoid running the search engine and thus using energy. A little advice: register the sites you visit most often, such as banks, social networks, your school's website and EMAIL
Change your email service provider.
It's the simple things like this that make a difference. If you think about it, your primary purpose in creating an email address is to communicate by email and to have storage space. A job that Gmail, Hotmail or Outlook does very well. But there are 100% free alternatives to reduce your energy impact and protect your data. You can choose for example: Protonmail or Tutanota.

Clean your mailbox and unsubscribe from spam.
Remember that 12 billion emails are sent every hour and that takes a lot of energy to send and to store. The solution is Clean Fox, a French start-up that offers a free service to clean up your mailbox. All you have to do is create an account and enter your email address.
Think twice before sending documents as attachments.
An email with an attached document is the energy equivalent of a light bulb burning for 1 hour. So try to think before you send a document as an attachment, ask yourself if it is really necessary or reduce the size of the document with an online compressor (which does not even change the quality of your documents).

Store your data on an external hard drive. Storing your data in the cloud is not very eco-friendly, as every time you want to access your documents it requires electricity.

Downloading instead of streaming video.

60% of all internet traffic worldwide comes from video streaming. So prefer downloading your favourite movies or listening to podcasts to streaming platforms like Netflix, HBO. Otherwise simply reduce the quality of the video, this will limit your impact.

ELECTRONIC ITEMS
Turn down the brightness level of your screen or use the dark mode. This will reduce the amount of power needed to illuminate your screen and thus conserve your device's battery for longer.
Look for labels on products. Buy products with the Energy Star label or certified by the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) to limit your impact.
Donate items you no longer use. Make an effort to donate them to an electronics recycling centre so that they can be reused and repurposed.
With all these tips, you have all the keys to change and improve the way you use the internet. Now, it's up to you !

Challenge - One week = Only one jar of trash (Bathroom)

Why not start a new ecological challenge today? The goal is to reduce your bathroom waste. The first step of the challenge: put all your bathroom waste into a 300g container and see how long it takes to fill it.

SPOIL: You'll be impressed by how fast it fills up.
With this exercise, we become aware of our daily waste. Now, here are some tips on how to minimize this waste.

  • To clean our ears, we are all fond of cotton buds, but ENT doctors strongly discourage this method, which is too aggressive and produces plastic waste every day. It is recommended to simply use the shower head near your ear once a week to clean it with clear water. So stop using cotton buds!

  • To remove make-up, it is very practical to use cotton pads with make-up remover but they end up in the bin every time, generating a lot of unnecessary waste. A simple, ecological and economical solution in the long term: washable cotton pads. After use, you simply wash them in the machine or by hand.

  • To wash yourself, choose a solid soap instead of a shower gel and say goodbye to plastic packaging. PS: it washes as well as the shower gel.

  • For shaving, the best thing is a safety razor, which is an investment but will prove to be very profitable. Indeed, no need to throw away the razor after use, you will simply have to change the blade once it is dull.

  • For your cocooning afternoons, opt for homemade masks instead of those from the big brands. In addition to being sure of the composition, you will limit your packaging waste. Here is a recipe for a mask to moisturise your face:
                - 3 teaspoons of white clay
                - 3 teaspoons of milk
                - 1 teaspoon of honey
Mix and apply to the face. Leave on for 20 minutes.

  • Finally, if you use menstrual pads or tampons during your period, why not try other more ecological alternatives. The menstrual cup or washable sanitary towels are real revolutions. After each use, they simply need to be cleaned so no more waste!
